چکیده

Archeomagnetic data from the Levant revealed periods within Holocene with fast and extreme changes in geomagnetic field. Yet, availability of archeomagnetic is sporadic correlation available sedimentary records region rather poor. To further explore decadal variations directions field, we investigate three outcrops late Dead Sea that are exposed along western retreating shores modern lake. The sediments were deposited under spatially varying limnological-environmental conditions, influencing their magnetic properties. southern section, located near Ein-Gedi Spa (EG section) dominated by detrital titanomagnetite whereas northern sections, Nahal Og (Og Ein-Feshkha (EF section), authigenic greigite. chronology sections was established radiocarbon dating short lived organic debris. obtained a 2 cm resolution. EF spanning time interval ca. 2,500 cal yr BP to 1,000 BP, greigite thus providing most robust record precise paleomagnetic directions. Greigite forms very early sediment effects smoothing inclination shallowing negligible. new reveal maximal deviation 20° geocentric axial dipole field between 2,400 2,200 accompanied swing 60° 35° over about century. This suggests high activity associated Levantine Iron Age anomaly.

High-resolution record of geomagnetic secular variation from Late Pleistocene Lake Lisan sediments (paleo Dead Sea)

We measured geomagnetic secular variation in Lake Lisan sediments (paleo Dead Sea). More than 1500 oriented samples were collected from a 27.3-m section of alternating aragonite and detritus laminae in the Dead Sea basin ranging in age from 67 to 32 ka. The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) is carried by titanomagnetite in the detrital laminae whereas the aragonite is diamagnetic. The NRM is...

Dynamics of the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion from Black Sea sediments

Investigated sediment cores from the southeastern Black Sea provide a high-resolution record from mid latitudes of the Laschamp geomagnetic polarity excursion. Age constraints are provided by 16 AMS C ages, identification of the Campanian Ignimbrite tephra (39.2870.11 ka), and by detailed tuning of sedimentologic parameters of the Black Sea sediments to the oxygen isotope record from the Greenl...

Magnetic properties of Lake Lisan and Holocene Dead Sea sediments and the fi delity of chemical and detrital remanent magnetization

We have studied the magnetic properties of wet and dry late Pleistocene Lake Lisan sediments and the Holocene Dead Sea sediments. Our initial prediction was that the properties of both would be quite similar, because they have similar source and lake conditions, unless diagenetic change had occurred. Rock magnetic and paleomagnetic experiments revealed three stages of magnetization acquisition....
